Paul Green and Lauren McDermott are the co-authors of the recently published I Can Get it For You Wholesale: Discount Rates and Withdrawal Liability, Benefits Law Journal (Wolters Kluwer), Vol. 33, No. 4 (Winter 2020). This important article discusses the recent spate of employer challenges to the use by multiemployer pension plans of different discount rates for assessing withdrawal liability from the rates used for minimum funding purposes.

This important article discusses the health risks and costs associated with vaping and the programs and practices employers, plan sponsors, and benefit plans can legally implement to discourage vaping.

Paul A. Green has been appointed to serve on the Maryland Small Business Retirement Savings Board. The Board has been charged by the Maryland General Assembly with responsibility for implementing an automatic IRA savings program for Maryland workers who have no other retirement savings alternatives through their work.

We are greatly saddened by the passing of our friend and colleague Richard C. Welch on the evening of December 11, 2015. Rick died peacefully, in his sleep, after a year-long battle with cancer. The family requests that any gifts be made in his name to the Jimmy Fund. Please remember him and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Maryland Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr., and Maryland House Speaker Michael E. Busch, were joined by United States Labor Secretary Thomas Perez today as they announced Paul Green and 18 others as members of a legislative and private sector commission created to focus on ways to improve the retirement security of the citizens of Maryland. The commission, which consists of legislators, business owners and experts in pension plans and retirement programs, will provide recommendations to the Maryland General Assembly for legislative consideration in January.
